Non-negotiable foundations for a successful remote recording musician

Uncategorized Mar 29, 2022

Imagine having a diary filled with artists and producers booking out sessions where you get to record music you love day in and day out.

In a world with information overload, it’s difficult to know the first steps to get to that dream, without feeling overwhelmed or like you’re not doing enough, and there’s every chance you’re actually doing the WRONG things without even knowing it!

I want the best for you, and so want to share the simplest, easiest principles that if followed, will get your remote recording business flying and with not a lot of effort. I know because I reap the rewards of these key principles every day in my business, they took a mere few hours to set up years ago, and have never failed me.

There are a few main targets to hit that will give you a solid foundation for your remote recording business, and if any of these are amiss, you will struggle, whilst those around you flourish, and you won't know why. So hit these and you’ll be well on your way.

  1. A Website

This is going to be your hub. Whenever someone asks about you or your service, when you post on social media, if you’re doing an interview, ANYTHING, this is where you want to point people to fall in love with you and what you do.

Make sure the URL is something easy to remember. For example, my name is Emily Dolan Davies - it’s long, it’s unmemorable on first hearing, there could be a discrepancy between how to spell Davies or Davis, hyphen, no hyphen?! Ah it’s a mess! So emilydolandavies.com isn't a great fit. However - EmilyDrums.com is- quick, easy, memorable, and does what it says on the tin:

  • EmilyDrums on your music
  • EmilyDrums for you
  • EmilyDrums for anyone that will ask! ;-p

If you’re starting from scratch then check out Wordpress.com for the easiest way into creating a website with tons of support online for any problems you might run into.

  1. A Portfolio

This is THE most important thing on your remote recording website, because if an artist or producer can’t actually hear what you’re creating then it’s the old ‘back’ button for them! The end, game over, you just lost, and you’ll most probably never realise why!

Instead, collate 4 or 5 of your favourite tracks you’ve worked on in your space, in your favourite genres that would be in line with what your ideal client would be looking for, and a style that you would ADORE recording in day in, and day out.

If you don’t have any tracks recorded yet, then get some backing tracks or loop packs (for all the non-drummers, check out DrumStemClub.com) and just record something as a starting point to build from. It’s not about having world-famous artists on your portfolio (yet!) it’s about showcasing what you do.

DO NOT include tracks that you’re not at least 80% happy with (I’m never 100% with anything I do!), or songs that you have recorded in another space. Nobody wants to be trying to replicate the sound of Abbey Road in their 8 x 16 ft garage! That’s stress nobody needs in their life!

  1.    A Way To Get In Touch

Finally don’t fall at the last hurdle by not letting your prospective client who is now chomping at the BIT to work with you to not be able to get in touch!

This can be a contact form (make sure it’s set up properly so you definitely get the message - and yes I’ve messed this up in the past, so no judgement!), or simply your email address.

The key is to make it as simple as possible for them to hire you!

Whatever you choose, please be mindful of your actual email address too. Sending a message from [email protected] doesn’t exactly scream ‘I’m a professional!’ An ideal email address would be [email protected] but an appropriate email address @gmail.com is fine.

The difference between focusing on the wrong, overly complicated, hard things, and the right, simple business principles that are actually RELEVANT to remote recording can be the difference between success, or feeling disheartened, exhausted, thinking ‘this isn’t for me, it’s too hard’, and ultimately throwing in the towel.

So make things easy, take these 3 simple steps for a solid foundation for your business that won’t ever let you down.
